Help joining your class

Most sign-in problems take about two minutes to fix. Try the steps below. If you are still stuck, tell us. A real person will reply to your email. If you are still stuck, please email learningjourney@northsouth.org.

Looking for your child's username, class times or where things stand? Open your private family page: enter any email address or phone number from the registration and we will email you your private link. Once your child's school account is ready, you can also reset the password there. If you don't see a Reset password button yet, the account is still being set up: there is nothing for you to do, and the page will show it as soon as it is ready.

The quick way in

Every child has a school account that ends in @northsouth.school. That account, not your own Gmail, is what opens the class.

  1. Find the school account. We emailed the username and a first password to the email address listed for your child when you registered. Search that inbox (and spam) for northsouth.school.
  2. Open the class with the school account only. If your phone or computer is already signed in to another Google account, it may open the class with that one by mistake. The steps for your device are below.
  3. Try it before the first class. Class 0 (some families call it the demo class) is a short practice session to try the Classroom and Meet together, so any problem shows up early and we can fix it with you.
The first password we send only works for 48 hours. If it has stopped working, that is normal. Use Forgot password? on the sign-in screen, or ask us below, or use the Reset password button on your private family page (it appears once your child's school account is ready. If you don't see it, the account is still being set up and there is nothing to reset yet: the page will show the button as soon as it is ready).

My child doesn't have a school account yet

We create each child's school account after the registration is paid. Right now new accounts are taking a little longer than usual, so if you registered or paid in the last few days, the account is on its way and the details will be emailed to the address listed for your child. You can see exactly where things stand on your private family page.

If the first class is within a day or two and you still have nothing, please send us a requestemail learningjourney@northsouth.org with your child's full name and class, and we will look into it first.

It says I can't join, asks for permission, or opens the wrong account

This almost always means Google is using a different account from the school account. The exact steps, with pictures of the Classroom app, are also on your private family page under your child's class. Pick your device:

  • iPhone or iPad: install the free Google Classroom and Google Meet apps. In either app, tap your profile picture (top right), tap Add another account, choose Google, and sign in with the school account. Make sure the school account is the one showing before you join.
  • Android phone or tablet: same idea. In the Classroom or Meet app, tap your profile picture, then Add another account.
  • Windows, Mac or Chromebook: open a private window (Ctrl+Shift+N on Windows or Chromebook, Command+Shift+N on a Mac), go to classroom.google.com, and sign in with the school account. Opening the class link in that window keeps your own Gmail out of the way.
I don't know my child's username

It looks like name@northsouth.school. We sent it to the email address listed for your child when you registered, so please check that inbox, including spam, and search for northsouth.school. Your child's username is also shown on your private family page once the account is ready, together with where the first password email was sent.

If you can't find it, or you're not sure which email you used, send us a requestemail learningjourney@northsouth.org with your child's full name and class. We will check and reply to you.

The password doesn't work, or has expired
  • The first password is only valid for 48 hours.
  • On the sign-in screen choose Forgot password?. Google sends a code to the recovery email on the account. That is usually the email address given for your child at registration, and Google shows only part of it (for example j•••@gmail.com).
  • If you can't get the code, send us a requestuse the Reset password button on your private family page (ask for the link there with any email address or phone number from the registration). If that page shows no Reset password button for your child, the school account is not ready yet, so there is nothing to reset: the page will show the button as soon as it is. Otherwise, email learningjourney@northsouth.org and we will reset the password for you.
Where is the class link?

Go to classroom.google.com signed in with the school account, open your child's class, and use the Meet link (the video camera) on the class page. If you can't see one, tell usemail learningjourney@northsouth.org and we will check. Your private family page also lists each class and its day and time.

The day and time of every class are on our classes page. All times are US Eastern Time.

The device is from my child's school and it won't work

Many school-issued iPads and Chromebooks block other Google accounts, or block Meet. Two things help:

  • Use a different device for class, such as a home computer, a family phone or tablet.
  • Or ask the school's IT team to allow Google Classroom and Google Meet for the northsouth.school account.

Not sure what to do? Ask usEmail learningjourney@northsouth.org and tell them what device it is.

I can't see homework or class materials

Homework and notes appear in the class on Google Classroom, opened with the school account, a little before or after each class. They are released on a schedule, so something may not be there yet. If a class is over and nothing has appeared, let us knowemail learningjourney@northsouth.org.
